We turn research into policy change

Walimu’s network of allies at the Ministry of Health and World Health Organization enable us to turn research findings into permanent changes at scale across Uganda.

Rt. Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, welcomes participants to Walimu’s Ebola clinical management training.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What’s different about Walimu Research? On-time and accountable execution of health research in resource-constrained settings in Uganda is our expertise. We have experience implementing scores of projects with hundreds of implementing locations, thousands of health workers and tens of thousands of patients. Most importantly, we adhere to the highest international standards for integrity and accountability, with zero-tolerance for misuse of funds and an expert and trustworthy finance team.
  • What’s different about Walimu Scaling? We only take on research projects that have a reasonable path to scale, if successful. We have deep relationships with partners within the Ministry of Health, WHO Country Office and other partners in country. We advocate and collaborate to sustainably scale interventions that improve health outcomes.
  • What types of health research can Walimu conduct? Our expertise is in implementation science, cross-cutting across a range of health verticals. We have centers that focus on tuberculosis and sepsis research, and we are open to working with new researchers to expand our areas of focus.
  • Are there any requirements for research projects? We have two hard requirements: (1) studies must be designed with an endpoint of improved health outcomes and (2) projects must have a reasonable path to scale – and a team interested in scaling – if successful.
  • What research services does Walimu provide? Walimu is a full-service research partner. We will assist you during the grant application phase. Once an award is secured, we handle all aspects of implementation under the direction of the principal investigator team. Most notably, we provide human resources (staffing, supervision) and finance (payments, reporting), two of the most difficult challenges for global researchers. We also handle grant reporting.
  • What policy advocacy funding opportunities does Walimu offer? Walimu has strong relationships and high credibility within the Ugandan health system. As a local NGO with a 100% Ugandan staff (150+) and a decade of collaboration with the Ministry of Health, WHO Country Office and others, we are well-positioned to advocate for interventions that will improve patient outcomes. If you are interested in contracting with us on a policy advocacy project, please reach out.
  • What is the high-impact fund? Currently, donations will be directed to our Smart Discharges program, which saves the life of a child for a few hundred dollars. Learn more about Smart Discharges →
